φῶς
light · phōs · light, radiance, illumination
Phōs in John is never only photons. It is revelation, holiness, the life of God made visible. Darkness is not a room. It is a way of walking.
Insight
Spoken at the Feast of Booths, when giant lampstands lit the temple courts in memory of the wilderness pillar of fire. Jesus stands in that glow and says the feast’s meaning is a Person. Following is the condition of not walking in the dark — not admiring the light from a seat, walking in it. The Light of life is not a metaphor you apply. It is a companion you have.
