John 4:14 · NASB · 1 of 6
but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him shall never thirst; but the water that I will give him will become in him a well of water springing up to eternal life.
Word study · Greek
πηγή
well · pēgē · a spring, a fountain, a source
Not a cistern you lower a bucket into. A pēgē is water that rises of itself. Jesus is promising an interior spring, not a weekly refill.
Insight
He says this to a woman who has come to a well in the heat, carrying a jar, carrying a history. The gift is not a better jar. It is a change of location: the well moves inside. ‘Never thirst’ does not mean you will not want God. It means the want will have an address, and the address will not run dry.
