John 1:1 · NASB · 1 of 6
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
Word study · Greek
λόγος
Word · logos · word, reason, the expressing mind
Logos is speech that carries meaning — not noise. John reaches for the word Greeks used for the reason that holds the world together, and Jews used for God’s creating speech, and then says that Word is a Person.
Insight
Three clauses, tightening like a vice of glory. The Word already was, in the beginning — so He is not a creature. The Word was with God — so He is distinct. The Word was God — so He is not less. Christianity does not begin with a teacher by a lake. It begins before there is a lake, with speech who is God, facing God.
